Job Title: Chapel Music Director (Catholic or Protestant).

Position Type: Independent Contractor / Non-Personal Services Contract.

Job Summary:

We are seeking qualified Chapel Music Directors to provide professional music direction and services for the Vandenberg Space Force Base Chapel. The ideal candidates will lead worship music for either the Catholic or Protestant faith community, plan and select liturgical/worship music, direct rehearsals and choir/praise teams, and manage volunteer musicians.

Responsibilities & Key Duties:

Musical Leadership & Performance:
- Plan, prepare, and lead music during regular weekly weekend worship services, special observances (holy days, memorial services, command-directed events), and weekly rehearsals.
- Select music corresponding to the liturgical calendar or sermon themes and submit selections to the Chaplain by noon on Wednesdays.
- Arrive 30 minutes prior to worship services and 15 minutes prior to rehearsals for setup and sound checks.
- Demonstrate proficiency on piano/keyboard or guitar to lead services independently or alongside a team.

Program & Administrative Management:

Coordinate closely with the Chaplain for music program alignment and budget planning (CTOF/APF).
Handle administrative paperwork, including facility and purchase requests.
Operate electronic audio/visual equipment and organize presentation/lyric slides as required.
Attend scheduled parish advisory meetings, chapel staff meetings, and performance check-ins.
Ensure all instruments and chapel facilities are properly maintained, cleaned, and secured after events.

Volunteer Management:

Serve as the Chaplain Corps Volunteer Supervisor for the respective music program.
Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise volunteer singers and instrumentalists.
Ensure volunteers complete required DoD forms (e.g., DD Form 2793) and child-care background checks where applicable.

Qualifications & Experience:

Age & Education: Minimum 18 years of age with a High School Diploma or equivalent. (A Bachelor’s degree in Music is preferred).
Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a music director or primary musician in a church environment, preferably within the applicable worship tradition (Catholic or Protestant).

Musical Proficiency:

Proficient in playing piano/keyboard or guitar.
Ability to read music, sight-read or play from chord charts, transpose, and improvise.
Working knowledge of relevant musical styles (Catholic: traditional hymns, liturgical settings, chants; Protestant: contemporary, traditional, gospel).

Soft Skills: Strong English communication skills (written and oral), interpersonal conflict-resolution skills, and the ability to work respectfully in a pluralistic military environment.

Pay & Compensation Structure:

Compensation Model: Flat-rate per service/rehearsal (1099 Independent Contractor Basis).

Billing & Payment Frequency: Monthly direct deposit (EFT).

Pay Breakdown by Unit of Work:
