Position Overview & Clinical Scope:
A hospital network in southeastern Michigan is seeking a Temporary Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) for night-shift coverage. The MLS conducts complex medical laboratory tests, procedures, and quantitative analyses on clinical specimens to provide critical data for disease diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. All work must follow established accreditation guidelines (CAP, CLIA) and laboratory quality control standards.
Key Responsibilities & Clinical Duties:
Diagnostic Testing & Analysis:
- Clinical Chemistry & Hematology: Perform quantitative chemical analyses on blood, urine, spinal fluid, and other body fluids. Analyze blood cells using automated analyzers and microscopic techniques to identify normal and abnormal cellular morphology.
- Immunohematology & Blood Bank: Conduct blood group, typing, antibody screening, and compatibility testing (crossmatching) to prepare blood products, plasma, and platelets for patient transfusions.
Laboratory Quality & Equipment Management:
- Instrumentation & Calibration: Ensure proper operation of automated analyzers, spectrophotometers, colorimeters, and specialized lab equipment through regular calibration, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair coordination.
- QA/QC & Safety Compliance: Adhere strictly to QA/QI protocols, infection control policies, and hazardous waste disposal standards to maintain a safe, compliant environment.
Inventory & Administrative Support:
- Specimen & Data Reporting: Prepare clear reports summarizing technological findings, entering accurate diagnostic data into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
- Inventory Control: Monitor supply levels, anticipate material needs, verify receipt of shipments, and maintain optimal stock of testing reagents and consumables.
Candidate Submission & Qualification Requirements
Experience & Education:
- Clinical Experience: Minimum of 2+ years of current Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) experience in an acute care setting [REQUIRED].
- Blood Bank Expertise: Demonstrated hands-on experience in blood bank/immunohematology [REQUIRED].
- Contract Experience: Prior travel MLS contract experience [PREFERRED].
Certifications:
- ASCP Certification: Active MLS (ASCP) or MT (ASCP) certification maintained in good standing [REQUIRED].
- Life Support: Active Basic Life Support (BLS) certification [REQUIRED].
