Position Summary:
The Patient Access Representative is responsible for patient registration and central scheduling for services rendered across hospital departments and provider practices. Essential duties include scheduling, registering patients, verifying demographic and insurance details, obtaining treatment authorizations, managing pre-admission, admission, and discharge functions, and executing Emergency Department registrations. This role works collaboratively across hospital departments and physician practices to deliver exemplary customer service and facilitate timely patient care. Additional duties may be assigned as directed.
Key Responsibilities:
- Registration & Intake: Greet patients, collect and accurately record demographic and financial/insurance information into computer databases and electronic systems. Accurately register patients for outpatient ancillary departments, outpatient services, surgical procedures, inpatient admissions, and the Emergency Department.
- Documentation & Compliance: Thoroughly explain and secure essential hospital and patient legal forms (e.g., Advance Directives, Conditions of Service, Treatment Consent, Important Message from Medicare, EMTALA). Maintain strict patient confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
- Insurance & Authorization: Verify insurance eligibility and coverage benefits. Obtain required insurance authorizations for outpatient services, surgical procedures, and inpatient admissions within designated timeframes.
- Scheduling & Communication: Schedule laboratory and radiology services. Collaborate with patients, provider offices, and ancillary departments to coordinate care. Utilize hospital and physician IT systems for provider correspondence while maintaining professional telephone etiquette.
- Multi-Area Competency: Perform essential Patient Access job functions across at least two service areas, including the Emergency Department.
- Teamwork & Operations: Build collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Assist with training new staff, contribute to team initiatives, maintain an organized work space, adhere to safety guidelines, and participate in ongoing education and regulatory policy reviews.
Submission Requirements:
- Experience: 2–3 years of current, relevant experience in a medical setting.
- Knowledge & Skills: Previous patient scheduling and/or registration experience; strong background in medical terminology; exceptional attention to detail and multitasking abilities.
- EHR Platform: Paragon (previous experience highly preferred).
- Education: High School Diploma or GED required.
