Job Title: Pathologists’ Assistant (PA) – Travel Contract

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and independent Pathologists' Assistant for a full-time travel contract assignment. In this role, you will be responsible for the preparation, gross description, and dissection of surgical pathology specimens, as well as assisting with frozen sections and managing the overall workflow of the surgical pathology grossing room. Operating under the high-level medical direction of the staff Pathologist(s), you will ensure all laboratory specimens are processed safely, accurately, and efficiently.

Compensation & Contract Details

  • Schedule: Full-Time, Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Consistent weekly schedule).

  • Overtime & Holiday Multipliers: 1.25x the standard hourly rate.

  • Orientation: 0 hours non-billable orientation (fully billable from day one).

  • Logistics: Candidates must have their own reliable vehicle for this assignment.

Candidate Requirements & Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Experience: Minimum of 1+ years of current, hands-on Pathologists' Assistant experience in a hospital setting [Required].

  • Core Competencies: Must be fully competent and proficient in performing frozen sections, grossing biopsies, and handling large, complex specimens [Required].

  • Education: Master’s Degree is highly preferred, though candidates with a Bachelor’s Degree and strong clinical experience will be reviewed.

Licensure & Certifications

  • Board Certification: Active and current (PA)ASCP Board of Certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology [Required – equivalent certifications not accepted].

  • State Licensure: Active, unrestricted New York State Pathology License [Required in hand at time of application].

Key Responsibilities

  • Specimen Processing: Perform the gross description, dissection, and preparation of surgical pathology specimens; review patient medical histories at the time of grossing.

  • Frozen Sections & Imagery: Assist with the rapid processing of frozen section specimens, take gross photographs when necessary, and perform photomicrographs for tumor conferences.

  • Grossing Room Oversight: Oversee the daily operations of the surgical pathology grossing room, including coordinating technical assistants, managing specimen accessioning, and maintaining a steady workflow for the Pathologists.

  • Lab Maintenance: Maintain optimal supply levels, ensure instruments are functioning properly, and troubleshoot clinical grossing equipment (such as cryostats) as needed.

  • Quality & Compliance: Follow standard operating procedures (SOP) for specimen collection, labeling, processing, storage, and reference lab testing while strictly adhering to safety rules, turn-around-time thresholds, and confidentiality policies.
